Refrigerated Rink Installation: What Is a Refrigeration System?

Refrigerated rinks utilize a sophisticated refrigeration system, which includes a chiller, pump, and specialized refrigeration mats. These mats circulate glycol through the rink floor to maintain excellent skating conditions, even in temperatures as high as 10°C. While this technology is traditionally found in commercial skating arenas, we have adapted it for residential use, offering both permanent and portable options.

Permanent systems can be embedded in concrete or sand or integrated into building flooring. Conversely, our portable systems—often referred to as “roll on, roll off”—feature piping laid on the rink surface, which can be easily rolled up and stored after each season. This versatility makes them perfect for various applications, including maximizing the use of your backyard, hosting special events, holiday rentals, movie shoots, or whenever a temporary ice surface is needed.

Additionally, our portable refrigeration systems can be installed on grass, tennis courts, concrete pads, or even in-ground pools.

The Installation Process

Setting up your refrigerated rink is a straightforward process. Here’s how we do it:

Roll out and lay the rink liner on the ice rink floor.

Roll out and lay the portable “roll-on-roll-off” piping.

Start up the chiller.

Connect the headers to the chiller(s).

Pressure test for any leaks.

Install rink boards and start ice-making.
